I will happily pay extra for a printing supply order that arrives exactly when promised. Not because I enjoy spending money, but because “probably soon” has cost me more than any rush fee ever will. The problem is when a vendor with a cheap price offers no real commitment to a promised date and expects me to carry the risk of being late.
If I could give one piece of advice to another administrator, it would be this: do not just compare prices. Compare failure costs. Ask what happens if the arrival date moves. If the answer is severe, pay a little extra for the supplier that shows up on time. Deadlines do not care about budget lines. The certainty premium is not a luxury. It is the cheapest way to protect the company schedule and your own credibility.
